Anoxia elicits the strongest stimulatory protective response in insect low-oxygen hormesis

چکیده

The manipulation of oxygen to trigger the stimulatory response known as hormesis is an area interest in insects that was born almost fifty years ago. Varying low-oxygen treatments have been investigated many times since with differing responses found; some hormetic/some harmful. In this review, we summarize recent advancements a focus on severe hypoxia and anoxia. These two fall below critical partial pressure (PO2, often referred Pcrit), level where metabolism impaired, for represent most robust forms type hormesis, yielding largest protective recorded insects. We introduce six factors influence effectiveness hormesis: content, length age at treatment, treatment method, sex, genetic background. Additionally, present glimpse mechanism hormesis.

Glycosylation processes are under high natural selection pressure, presumably because these can modulate resistance to infection. Here, we asked whether inactivation of the UDP-galactose:β-galactoside-α1-3-galactosyltransferase (α1,3GT) gene, which ablated the expression of the Galα1-3Galβ1-4GlcNAc-R (α-gal) glycan and allowed for the production of anti-α-gal antibodies (Abs) in humans, confers...

Hormesis: the dose-response revolution.

Hormesis, a dose-response relationship phenomenon characterized by low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition, has been frequently observed in properly designed studies and is broadly generalizable as being independent of chemical/physical agent, biological model, and endpoint measured. This under-recognized and -appreciated concept has the potential to profoundly change toxicology and its r...

Radiation hormesis and adoptive response induced by low doses of limiting radiation

Ionizing radiation has long been known to produce detrimental biological effects. Although these harmful effects are the results of high doses of exposure, some other maladies such as mutation and cancer seems  to be induced at low doses of exposure. In recent decades, however, some pioneer scientists have indicated that ionizing radiation like many other essential agents has toxic effects  ...

Low Oxygen Response Mechanisms in Green Organisms

Low oxygen stress often occurs during the life of green organisms, mostly due to the environmental conditions affecting oxygen availability. Both plants and algae respond to low oxygen by resetting their metabolism. The shift from mitochondrial respiration to fermentation is the hallmark of anaerobic metabolism in most organisms. This involves a modified carbohydrate metabolism coupled with gly...

Reactive oxygen species, ageing and the hormesis police.

For more than 50 years, the free radical theory served as the paradigm guiding most investigations of ageing. However, recent studies in a variety of organisms have identified conceptual and practical limitations to this theory. Some of these limitations are related to the recent discovery that caloric restriction and other experimental manipulations promote longevity by inducing hormesis effec...
